After an awesome happy hour at Zola’s, my buddy and I walked around the tourist trap Chinatown looking for something to get into. I expressed my desire for cupcakes and they suggested Red Velvet Cupcakery. Located right off the Chinatown metro, their location is ideal.
Walking into the tiny shop we were greeted by the person at the register and, I presume, the manager. Their customer service was great and the cupcakes are a decent size. I noticed that there were alot of exotic flavors but I ordered a variation of my usual: lemon-coconut, coconut (redundant, I know) and vanilla. All placed in a cutie-pie bag that now doubles as my lunch bag, I was eager to tear into the much talked about cupcakes.
Sadly, the cupcakes sucked! My vanilla and lemon-coconut cupcakes were decent but not crave worthy. The plain coconut cupcake tasted like lard-infested frosting playing host to huge sugar granules. Ironically, I didn’t try their namesake cupcake, the red velvet. However if my chosen cupcakes were any indication, I wasn’t wrong in my choices. I'm so sad to read that you didn't like Red Velvet Cupcakery! :[ They are my absolute favorite cupcake shop around. I love the "B-day" cupcake, which says a lot for a chocolate addict like me!

I definitely have to say that Red Velvet Cupcakery's cupcakes are a bit... dense? moist? not light and fluffy, basically -- which may not be up everyone's alley.

I recently had their Black Velvet Cupcake, which is gluten free, and it was great! Also, they had a special flavor: chocolate with sea salted caramel. So yummy. ^_^

Hi Kitty!
Sadly, The Critic didn't like it :0( (although we think that they are good people- just bad cuppies). Some of my friends disagreed with me and convinced me to a do-over! So, I will be revisiting some of the low-scoring shops soon to see if things have changed or if it was a bad batch that day.
Thank you so much for letting me know your thoughts Kitty! I love to get feedback and hear what my readers are feeling. On the re-do, I'll be sure to get a salted caramel and give you a S/O :0)
